THE MOST frequently chosen names for newborns in Slovakia were Adam and Ema in Slovakia in 2014. This stems from a poll organised by the Najmama website, focused on children and maternity.

The top names among boys were Adam, Jakub, Samuel, Martin, Matúš, Filip, and Matej, leaving behind last year’s successes like Tomáš, Lukáš or Michal.

For girls, most frequent names were Ema, Sofia, Natália, Nina, Karolína, Kristína and Laura. Last year’s tops Nela, Viktória and Simona were left out.

The results of the poll show that after a period of “trendy” foreign names, Slovaks are returning to traditional local names, with Anna, Hana, and Mária being ever more preferred, the SITA newswire wrote.

However, apart form the popular, traditional names; there were also curiosities – as in almost every year. In Spišská Nová Ves, Alejandro, Alejandra and Diego appeared, but also Danea or Emir. In Bratislava, names like Mannaseh, Borsalino, Tigran, Cassius, Nellie and Dallas were registered for children, in addition to Santann. In Galanta, Santino, Chanel, Armani, Feriha and Beyoncé were born. Overall, names like Luna, Sofia, Riana, Ryan, or Tarik appeared in Slovakia, too.
