THE SLOVAK cabinet yesterday (April 6) officially announced that since Monday, April 4, Slovakia had been in national mourning for Pope John Paul II, who died on April 2.
Until April 6, however, no state official clearly stated that Slovakia was in national mourning, the daily SME reported.
The cabinet paid its respects to the Pope by observing one minute’s silence at its April 6 session. Justice Minister Daniel Lipšic said that raising flags at half-mast was an expression of the national mourning according to the respective law. The Interior Ministry ordered the flags be raised at half-mast as of April 4.
Lipšic admitted, however, that the public should have been better informed of this fact.
