SLOVAKIA has become a strong and trustworthy NATO member, said NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer following a meeting with top state officials during his visit to Slovakia.
De Hoop Scheffer noted that Slovakia has participated in almost all recent NATO missions around the world. He observed that Slovakia is reforming its armed forces, a big issue throughout the alliance.
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and De Hoop Scheffer agreed on the need for the political transformation of NATO, with an eye toward increasing its political mission, the TASR news wire reported.
Military reform and decisions about the necessary size and structure of NATO military units are also a must for making the organization more effective, said De Hoop Scheffer.
