Slovakia's central bank, the NBS, posted a loss of more than €515 million last year, NBS spokesperson Petra Pauerová announced on Tuesday, March 15. The TASR newswire reported that Pauerová cited audited financial statements approved by the NBS Bank Board.
The loss is higher than in 2009, when the NBS reported a loss of just over €70 million. The NBS engages in many of the same financial and market transactions as it did before 2009, when Slovakia adopted the euro, but now does so as part of the eurozone, in co-ordination with the European Central Bank and other central banks. The NBS Bank Board decided that the 2010 loss would be forwarded to an account where losses from previous years accumulate, and that these losses will be erased using future NBS profits.
