Slovakia's total foreign debt reached $44.3 billion by the end of 2007, the country's central bank (NBS) said on March 25, the TASR newswire wrote.
Foreign debt grew by $200 million in December, with an increase in short-term foreign debt of $1 billion. For the whole of 2007, Slovakia's total gross debt rose by $12.1 billion, with long-term debt up by $4.1 billion and short-term debt increasing by $8 billion.
"The most significant growth was recorded in short-term passives of commercial banks, which grew by $6 billion," said the central bank. Total gross foreign debt per capita in Slovakia rose by $2,250 last year. The ratio of short-term foreign debt to gross foreign debt increased by 5 percentage points year-on-year. Net foreign debt, calculated as the difference between gross foreign debt of $44.3 billion and foreign actives of $37 billion, reached $3.7 billion by the end of December. TASR
