A major new cycle-route in the High Tatras will measure some 300 km, and will stretch across traditional Slovak areas such as Podhalie, Orava, Liptov and Spiš, it was reported on September 15. The new route is a joint Slovak-Polish project within the Euro-region Tatry Cross-border Program.
The question of whether to include the Spiš area in the route was discussed at a meeting held by an expert committee this week in Kežmarok (Prešov region). The overall project, whose official name is the Historical-Cultural-Natural Route in the Tatras, also includes hiking, skiing, educational, horse-riding as well as so-called hobby routes.
Its main objective is to enhance the potential of tourism in the High Tatras on both sides of the Slovak-Polish border. The project can be traced back to the tenth Euro-region Tatry congress that took place in 2004.
The project is being jointly organized by Association Region Tatry in Kežmarok and by Zwiazek Euroregion Tatry in Nowy Targ on the Polish side of the border.
