SLOVAK men will remain subject to conscription even after compulsory military service is abolished and the armed forces professionalized, according to a Defence Ministry law approved by the government on June 29, TASR news agency wrote.
"We will continue to register young men even if they do not do compulsory military service," Defense Minister Juraj Liška told the press.
Men aged between 19 and 45 may be called up in times of war, or under martial law. Conscientious objectors can opt for alternative duty: rescue operations during natural disasters or work in the healthcare sector. Military reserves will be created from former professional soldiers for crisis situations. Officially, the president will call up reserves and registered citizens.
The changes will take effect as of January 2007 if approved by parliament.
