A NEW bridge connecting Komarno in Slovakia and Komarom in Hungary is being planned for construction between 2007 and 2010. The new bridge will replace the existing Elisabeth bridge connecting the two towns, which is more than 110 years old, the TASR news agency reported.
The authorities are studying a proposal that the bridge be built near the already existing railway bridge, with a direct approach to the highway connecting Komárno and Bratislava.
Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) Chairman Béla Bugár said that the SMK fully supports the building of the new bridge.
"The already existing bridge can't cope with the traffic any more. Also, in terms of cross-border co-operation, we want to improve infrastructure and help the development of the region," Bugár said.
The construction calls for an investment of approximately Sk2 million (€50,000), and 60 percent of this will be spent on the bridge itself.
Local leaders expect that the new bridge will help the region's development, reduce the traffic through the downtowns of both cities and improve environmental protection.
