BRATISLAVA's fifth bridge across the Danube River, which has the working name the Košická Bridge, will now probably be named after Pope John Paul II, the Pravda daily reported.

According to the city mayor's spokesman Milan Vajda, "members of the council received many calls from citizens requesting that the bridge be named after the Holy Father."

Prior to the pontiff’s death the authorities were considering naming the bridge after Milan Rastislav Štefánik, the Slovak politician, or inventor and scientist, Jozef Murgaš.

The final decision will be made on April 28.
