A new Hungarian party set to be called the Hungarian Christian Democratic Alliance is forming in Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported on Wednesday, October 24. The foundations of the new party were laid by former director of the Danube Museum Csaba Fehér, János Sárkozi, and other figures at a meeting in the village of Búč in Komárno District earlier this week.
"We began collecting signatures on Monday. We'd like to collect [the required 10,000] signatures by March. We aren't in any hurry," Fehér told TASR. The party should feature mainly people from Komárno and its vicinity who are better known at the local and regional levels than nationally. Meanwhile, there is a certain amount of speculation that the new party might be a tool of the opposition Most-Hid party aimed at weakening its rival, the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK). Fehér denied that the party has anything to do with Most-Híd or the SMK, TASR reported.
Most-Hid vice-chairman Zsolt Simon told TASR that he isn't surprised that a new ethnic-Hungarian party has emerged, as its leading figures launched a similar civic initiative a few years ago. "It was only a matter of time before they made it into a political party," said Simon.
