Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) spokesperson Marián Kardoš announced that the first issue of the new opposition daily, Nový Deň, was virtually sold out by noon on December 1 in Bratislava. He said the paper's success was due to the curiosity of first-time readers. Kardoš added that Nový Deň was an independent institution with nothing in common with the HZDS except political philosophy.
Nový Deň editor in chief Dušan Kerný said he saw no obstacle to the paper's being published daily. Initially, the paper had been to appear on November 15, but problems with installing the editorial software caused a delay.
In mid-September, the HZDS announced it no longer considered the Slovenská Republika daily as its media vehicle, and was going initiate the birth of a completely new daily.
