THE CONSTRUCTION of a new industrial park to support investments in the region started on June 28 in the city of Poprad.
Estimated costs of the project are Sk175 million (€4.55 million), the bulk of which is to be met by the European Union and Sk20 million (€520,000) by the Poprad city council, the TASR news wire reported.
This year, the industrial park will provide jobs for 400 people on nine hectares of land. Later it 1,000 jobs will be created and the park will expand its area to 20 hectares.
"The premises will be offered to mechanical and electrical engineering firms," said Stanislav Corej of the development firm RoTTel, of Prešov.
He added that mechanical and engineering firms correspond to the skills of the available workforce in the area.
Home appliance producer Whirlpool is a well-established firm in the region. Poprad Mayor Anton Danko expects future investors to focus on mechanical and electric engineering.
Whirlpool head Erico Biondi has mentioned two Italian firms that are interested in locating in Poprad, Danko claims.
