Justice Minister Daniel Lipšic has announced plans to build a new maximum security jail for dangerous criminals, saying he fears that Slovakia’s current facilities are not safe against a potential prison break organised from the outside.
Some 7,720 people are serving time in Slovakia’s 18 prisons, 5,582 of whom have been convicted of crimes and 2,138 of whom are awaiting trial. The prison population is below the nation’s cell capacity, at 82 per cent.
