SLOVAKIA’S biggest city folklore festival, the Cassovia Folkfest in Košice, launched its 33rd edition by setting a new record.
The festival opened on June 28 with an attempt to set a record for the number of people dancing a traditional eastern-Slovak folk dance, called the karička, in one place simultaneously. In total, 444 karička enthusiasts danced together in one giant circle.
The karička encircled the open-air stage in the Main Square, the Immaculata statue and the park near the State Theatre in downtown Košice. Folklore dancers, as well as pupils, pensioners and other volunteers from Košice, Michalovce, Moldava and Bodvou and Valaliky join the local dance, as well as folklore troupes from Poland, Ukraine and Japan.
Vladimír Urban, art director and choreographer of the Slovak folklore ensemble Železiar, coordinated the dancers.
Marián Angelovič of the Book of Slovak records confirmed the new record of 444 people dancing the karička simultaneously for the TASR newswire. In total, 1,500 visitors attended this year’s Cassovia Folkfest.
