AFTER MONTHS of only having a temporary leader for the National Security Office (NBÚ), the ruling parties are nearing an agreement on the new head of the office, a crucial step for Slovakia, as it must ensure reliable security as a future NATO member.
After the coalition failed to agree on half a dozen candidates, the ruling New Citizen's Alliance recently proposed another person who seems to be acceptable to all the ruling parties.
Private news channel TA3 reported on January 19 that the hopeful candidate is František Kašický, 35, the current head of the military defence intelligence VOS.
Kašický worked as a spokesman at the Defence Ministry before he was named to the top VOS post under ex-Defence Minister Ivan Šimko.
The Hungarian Coalition Party will accept the candidate and the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union said it would accept all candidates that are acceptable to the remaining ruling partners.
Pavol Minárik, head of the parliamentary caucus of the fourth ruling party, the Christian Democratic Movement, said that his party would soon discuss the new candidate, but it seemed likely that he would be deemed acceptable.
