SLOVAK MPs approved a new law on the National Security Office (NBÚ) on March 11 that, among other changes, will ban the former active members of the communist secret service (ŠtB) from working in posts that have access to sensitive information, the Slovak daily Pravda wrote.
MPs also decided that under the new law the head of the NBÚ would be named and recalled by the parliament based on the proposals of the cabinet, despite efforts by some MPs to fully transfer this power to the parliament.
The law cuts down the number of people who do not have to undergo security screening and it also enables those who do not pass the security screening to demand an explanation from the NBÚ, which was not possible under the old law.
