THE OPPOSITION Smer party remains the country's most popular party, with 34- percent voter support, according to a new poll released September 21 by the Focus agency, the SITA news agency reported.
The poll also confirmed an earlier result in a survey from the Slovak Statistical Office (ŠÚSR) released a few days ago, that the former ruling New Citizen's Alliance Party (ANO), lead by ex-Economy Minister Pavol Rusko, has seen a dramatic drop in voter support. According to the Focus poll it was down to 2.6 percent. The ŠÚSR poll showed ANO down with just 2.1 percent in September.
According to the Focus poll, the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) ranked second with 12.4 percent, the Hungarian Coalition Party scored 11.9 percent and the Christian Democratic Movement 8.9 percent.
Prime Minister Mikuláš Drzuinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union had 7.4 percent and non-parliamentary nationalist Slovak National Party 7 percent. The Slovak Communist Party registered 5.8 percent support.
The Free Forum, ANO, Movement for Democracy (HZD) and other smaller parties would not get into parliament, scoring lower than the 5 percent threshold.
