THE NEW internet portal Nemlčme.sk was launched on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to offer shelter and help to victims of sexual violence. One of the creators of the project, Dália Gregorová, discussed her experience with sexual abuse and rape in an interview published by the Sme daily and an internet blog.
Gregorová said that she did not anticipate so much discussion over the reports about her experiences. She has since heard from other victims of sexual abuse who were willing to talk about it, as reported by the SITA newswire.
“I felt a big relief,” Gregorová told SITA, adding that this feeling soon grew into “a feeling of responsibility, since I know from my own experience how difficult it is to talk about it with anybody, not even publicly”.
According to estimates, thousands of rapes occur in Slovakia every year, but the victims rarely report them to the police, mostly out of fear about how their relatives and friends would react, SITA wrote.
The project, on the ĽudiaĽuďom.sk website, is currently trying to obtain public support to help with its implementation. It aims to cover several areas of the problem of sexual violence. In addition to being a place of first contact and support for victims, witnesses and their relatives, its creators want the site to offer help from experts and provide a shelter to those who are able to share the information. It should also offer information and material help to victims, as reported by SITA.
