THE NATIONAL Library in Martin is now offering the chance to read local papers from a century ago. The Digital Library and Digital Archives project of the Slovak National Library (SNK) is making all dailies, weeklies and monthlies published in the country a hundred years ago accessible to the public.
At its www.dikda.eu website, it has gradually been publishing national newspapers as well as specialised papers and magazines for workers, literature enthusiasts, women and fans of humour.
SNK general manager Katarína Krištofová told the SITA newswire that newspapers can offer one of the most accurate images of what society in Slovakia was preoccupied with 100 years ago. “We want to let the public have a look at the magazines and newspapers that are 100 years old,” she said, “to follow their style and the topical issues that resonated in society.”
SMK spokesperson Miriam Štefková added that the project – co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund – can only present to the public works which are not protected by copyright laws. Copyright expires 70 years after an author’s death.
