Foreign nationals in Slovakia no longer need to visit Foreigners’ Police offices exclusively to activate the security personal code (BOK) on their residence permits.

Amid a surge in demand, which has led to long waiting times at these offices, the national police have told residents that BOK activation can also be carried out at document departments of district police directorates and at client centres of district offices nationwide.

Holders of documents with an active BOK are encouraged to make use of the state’s e-services. Some require a qualified electronic signature (KEP), with certificates available online via the eID application. However, the official step-by-step guide to obtaining these certificates is available only in Slovak – a recurring frustration for many non-Slovak speakers.
