No rights lesson from Schuster

PRESIDENT Rudolf Schuster met Chinese President Chiang Che-Min in Beijing January 6, discussing trade ties and treating the Chinese leader to a folk display by the Jánošík group from Zvolen, whose music so excited Chiang that he got up on stage to dance along.

The two leaders did not, however, discuss China's human rights record. "Human rights are balanced by China's strong economy, which attracts the largest global firms. These [firms] do not give lectures [on human rights]," Schuster said.

In addition to the energy sector, where the firm SES Tlmače has helped build power plants in China, Slovak firms are aiming for military industry contracts. The Slovak firm Delta Line has also signed a $200 million contract to reforest the area around Beijing.
