WATERS rose in several Slovak rivers in the west and north of the country after several days of rain in early January, with local officials calling flood alerts near Žilina and Malacký districts.

Weather forecasters were not expecting the situation to worsen into flooding similar to that of the summer of 2002, as cold temperatures in the second week of January turned rainfall into snow and halted the thaw.
