Prosecutor mentioned in the Fico-Vadala calls case nominated for European Prosecutor's Office post

The prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor's Office, Juraj Novocký, has been chosen as Slovakia's representative for the newly-created European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).

Novocký, who holds top-secret security clearance, is part of the team looking into the case of the murdered journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, the Sme daily reported.

However, his name also appeared in connection with the alleged phone calls between ex-PM and Smer chair Robert Fico along with alleged Italian mafia figure Antonino Vadala. Fico used Novocký's official statement in March to refute the claim that he had been in contact with the Italian.

Three candidates required

The commission, comprised of the representatives of the General Prosecutor's Office, the Justice Ministry, and the Judicial Council, unanimously voted for Novocký.

Apart from him, Katarína Peružeková and Vladimír Javorský submitted their applications for the post at EPPO, but did not succeed in the selection procedure, Sme wrote.

Slovakia is supposed to propose three candidates to the EPPO. One of them will be part of the College of Prosecutors, while the other two are expected to join the European Delegated Prosecutors (EDPs).
