AT THE SAME time as the UN Security Council decided to sanction Iran because of its nuclear program, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Manouchehr Mottaki visited Slovakia. Mottaki was received by his Slovak counterpart, Ján Kubiš, on March 13 and they discussed Iran's nuclear program.
The Iranian minister claimed that his country only uses nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and that his country is against nuclear weapons. An initiative for the meeting came from the Iranian side, the Foreign Ministry's spokesman Ján Škoda confirmed for the Hospodárske Noviny daily.
Mottaki's visit to Slovakia was part of his European tour, which was continued with visits to Slovenia, Belgium and Italy.
