The number of tourists from Finland, Canada and India visiting Slovakia in the first half of 2011 rose dramatically according to figures released by Slovakia’s Statistics even while the number of German visitors declined, the TASR newswire reported.
The number of tourists from India increased from 758 to 1,467 in the first half of 2011 on a year-on-year basis, TASR wrote. The number of Canadian and Finnish tourists increased by more than 100 percent largely due to the ice hockey world championship that was held in Bratislava and Kosice this spring.
In total, Slovakia received over 657,000 tourists in the first half of 2011, a 12-percent rise from the same period last year. Tourists from the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany topped the list in total numbers.
