On an annual basis, the number of people on benefits in September was down by 300. March saw the largest number of recipients of unemployment benefit during the past year, with close to 45,700 people claiming it. The figures were released by the social security provider, Sociálna Poisťovňa.

According to the draft budget for 2013, Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP) expects to pay unemployment benefits to 42,600 unemployed people per month on average next year. The number of recipients of unemployment benefits in 2013 is thus expected be about the same as this year. For the first half of this year, SP paid unemployment benefits on average to 43,900 people per month. It plans to spend nearly €172 million on unemployment benefits next year, €2.3 million less than what it expects to pay out this year.
