Obama congratulates Fico on his re-election

US President Barack Obama has conveyed his congratulations to Slovakia's newly-elected prime minister, Robert Fico, on his successful re-election. In a letter handed over to the Smer chairman on Thursday, April 26, by US Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick, the US president wished Fico much success during his new tenure. Based on the general election results, he stressed, Fico's mandate is backed by the strong trust of the domestic populace, the TASR newswire wrote.

"He mentioned that Slovakia represents an important NATO ally in Afghanistan and thanked our country for staying committed to its obligations in this region. He also praised Slovak activities in the fight against terrorism, the participation of the country in the Open Governance Programme and specific activities aimed at supporting democratic reforms in Tunisia," read a statement released by Government Office. Barack Obama also expressed his wish to continue and further develop the mutual co-operation and friendship between the two countries.
