An officer with the Trnava district police, aged 30, wound up in handcuffs on Saturday, July 6, after being chased by police following his involvement in a car accident near the city of Nitra. TV JOJ informed that the driver was an off-duty police officer. During the chase, he demolished several crash barriers and police delivered three warning shots in an attempt to stop him.
The incident started after the off-duty officer caused an accident when backing out of a parking space in front of a pub in Jelšovce, a village near Nitra. TV JOJ claimed his car had a diplomatic license plate, which he then quickly replaced. After the driver was apprehended, he refused to take a breathalyser test, and was thus charged with driving under the influence. The Interior Ministry is investigating the case. Due to the police corps’ zero tolerance policy towards alcohol, the police are arranging to have the officer dismissed.
