THE AIM of an initiative against the European constitution, organised by the non-parliamentary Civic Conservative Party (OKS), is to prevent the agreement from being ratified in Slovakia, its organisers say.
Together with three conservative youth organisations, two institutes, two internet media outlets and one foundation, OKS will take whatever measures necessary to achieve this goal, Ondrej Dostál, coordinator of the initiative, told the state-run news agency TASR.
The organisers are asking politicians, especially PM Mikuláš Dzurinda, to facilitate open discussion on the new European constitution as well as to reassess attitudes by holding a referendum on the issue.
Dostál thinks that bypassing a referendum is like ignoring public opinion.
In his opinion, rejection of the European constitution does not immediately mean the end of the EU. He said, "the EU needs some concrete and practical changes for the better rather than a constitution."
The European constitution is primarily directed towards centralisation and a burgeoning bureaucracy in Brussels, say the organisers.
