Slovakia’s Public Defender of Citizens’ Rights Pavel Kandráč will examine the construction of a concrete wall next to a Roma settlement in Michalovce, Košice Region.
“Based on information from the media on the construction of a concrete wall in Michalovce, the Ombudsman’s Office asked the Mayor of Michalovce for a written statement and photocopies of relevant documentation relating to the construction of a concrete wall in the [Roma] settlement of Angy Mlyn, specifically [explaining] how the obligations ensuing from the building law were observed,” the head of the Ombudsman's Office, Henrieta Antalová, told the SITA newswire on Wednesday, August 25.
The office also requested a statement on the reported objections of the inhabitants from the Roma settlement, who have claimed that due to the construction of the wall their access to civic amenities has been restricted and that they are being discriminated against based on their ethnicity.
