One of the people accused of Kuciak’s murder has confessed guilt

The alleged driver, Miroslav Marček, did so during the interrogation.

Miroslav Marček, who stands accused in the case of the murder of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, confessed during his interrogation on April 11, that he shot the couple to death.

The information was first brought to light by the public-service broadcaster RTVS, but was later confirmed to the Sme daily by sources from the investigation.

Six-hour-long interrogation

The police had originally worked with the version that Marček was a driver who drove hit man Tomáš Szabó to the crime scene.

The private broadcaster TV JOJ reported that Marček was brought after a six-hour long interrogation in Nitra to Sládkovičovo and to Veľká Mača (both in Trnava Region), where the couple was shot dead.

A spokesperson of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Jana Tökölyová has not commented on the information yet, the TASR newswire reported.

So far, controversial businessman Marian Kočner has been charged with the murder as the main person who ordered it, while Alena Zsuzsová has been suspected of actually ordering and paying for the murder, Zoltán Andruskó of being a go-between, Tomáš Szabó of shooting and Miroslav Marček of driving Szabó to Veľká Mača.

Andruskó has reportedly cooperated with the police and testified against Kočner. He allegedly promised €20,000 as a reward to both Szabó and Marček, and is said to have planned to keep €10,000 for himself. The prosecutor’s office announced at the press conference on October 1, that the price of the murder was €70,000, with €20,000 being debt remission.

Kočner’s attorney Marek Para has confirmed that his client insists on his innocence.

Who is Miroslav Marček?

  • Former soldier and cousin of Tomáš Szabó.

  • After he left the army, he worked as a taxi driver, he drove clients to the airport. He does not have much money, he lived a humble life, said his girlfriend Martina for the Hospodarske Noviny daily in the past.

  • He worked as a security guard at the boats with Szabó and also in the store selling nutritional supplements.
