The current chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Ján Figeľ, is the only candidate who has been proposed for the post by the party’s district conventions to date. The KDH will elect its chairman and party leadership at a congress on June 23 in Ružomberok. KDH deputy chairman Pavol Abrhan said he does not expect the name of another candidate to emerge from the KDH district congresses.
Abrhan said on Wednesday, May 23, as reported by the SITA newswire, that the meetings so far have dwelt on the political future of party vice-chair Daniel Lipšic. "Everyone is waiting for what Daniel Lipšic will eventually say. Members are asking because Lipšic announced that he would inform about his political future by the end of May. The interest of members is natural, but even we do not have any more information," he said.
Abrhan said he is aware that Lipšic is holding discussions with various other politicians, but expressed regret that he has not discussed his political vision with politicians within the KDH. He did not rule out Lipšic announcing his decision on Monday, May 28, when the Christian Democrats will hold a party leadership meeting, their last this month.
According to media reports that have been neither confirmed nor denied, Lipšic has been discussing a project for a new centre-right political party with various politicians. Former Prime Minister Iveta Radičová was the first to refuse to join such a party. KDH MP Radoslav Procházka has also declined, saying he does not want to leave his party.
