The opposition HZDS party of former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar is the most popular political party in Slovakia, a recent poll by the Markant polling agency found.

If an election were held tomorrow, 28.2% of citizens would vote for the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS). That tops the support of the strongest force in the current government, the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK), whose five parties combined would collect a total of 24.2% of the vote.

The ruling coalition member Party of the Democratic Left (SDĽ) was the third most popular party, with 14%. The government Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) was next, with 10.2%, followed by the opposition Slovak National Party (SNS) with 9.8%, and the government Party of Civil Reconciliation (SOP) with 8.3%.

The non-parliamentary Communist Party won more support (4.2%) than the Christian-Democratic Movement, or KDH (3.4%), which is the faction within the SDK to which Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda belongs.
