Smer, the senior coalition party led by Robert Fico, could create a coalition with only one other party if the parliamentary elections took place in March 2009, according to the latest poll by the state’s Institute for Research of Public Opinion (ÚVVM), the SITA newswire reported.
Smer received 43.7 percent votes of those who took part in the poll, which would ensure the party 70 seats in parliament. The second place was taken by the biggest opposition party SDKÚ, which received 12.5 percent of the votes and would end up with 20 MPs. The next party would be the Slovak National Party with 10.6 percent and 17 parliamentary seats. Among the other parties which would be represented in parliament according to the latest poll are the Christian Democrats (KDH) with 10.6 percent, the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) with 8.5 percent and Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) with 8.2 percent.
The poll took place between March 1 and 9 among a representative sample of 1,127 respondents. According to the poll, 65.9 percent of the respondents would vote in the parliamentary elections and 24.4 percent say they definitely would not vote, SITA reported. SITA
