Smer, the largest coalition party in the current ruling coalition, would win the support of 41.4 percent of voters if parliamentary elections were held in the middle of January, a recent opinion poll survey suggests.
The opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) would collect 15.2 percent, followed by the Christian Democrats (9 percent). The opinion poll was carried out by the Focus polling agency among 1,057 respondents between January 13 and January 19, 2010. The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) received the support of 6.5 percent of respondents. A total of 6.2 percent supported the third coalition partner, the Slovak National Party (SNS). The Hungarian Coalition Party would get 5.6 percent, according to the poll.
Most-Híd, and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) would also make it to parliament, with 5.2 and 5.1 percent respectively. A total of 14.8 percent of respondents said they would not cast their ballots and 20.3 percent were undecided about whom to support.
Compared with December 2009, Smer’s position firmed by almost 4 percentage points. The SDKÚ, by contrast, lost nearly 4 percentage points. The popularity of both the Christian Democrats and the Slovak National Party fell by two percentage points. The survey further showed that the remaining parties enjoyed the same support in January as they had in late 2009. SITA
