THE OPPOSITION remains divided over choosing a candidate for the chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ).
The leaders of the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd, united under the People’s Platform, want to introduce their own candidate for the NKÚ post. Parliament will hold another vote on May 28, with a deadline of May 17 for submitting candidates.
Originally, the opposition agreed that Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) would propose the candidate. But as the party has recently lost a number of its MPs, the situation has changed, and the Platform plans to introduce its own candidate, on condition that the vote is public, said Béla Bugár, the leader of Most-Híd, on April 26, as reported by the SITA newswire.
SaS considers the decision of the People’s Platform to be a violation of the opposition’s mutual agreement. According to the party, such steps raise the suspicion that the other parties are cooperating with Smer leader Robert Fico, the TASR newswire reported.
SaS has allegedly selected former MP Milan Laurenčík for the post, according to TASR. However, the party has not confirmed this information.
Votes for a new NKÚ chair have been held on four separate occasions during the current government’s term, none of which have been successful since none of the opposition candidates received enough votes to be elected.
According to the ruling Smer, the nominee must receive unanimous support from the opposition, which, in its words, has not happened yet.
