OPPOSITION parties Smer, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) and the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) have established their own companies to try and make money to finance party operations.
However, the ruling coalition parties are not using this "opportunity," the daily SME reports.
The Smer agency, established by Smer, is in the red, but the party's general manager, Igor Federič, thinks that this year it could make a profit.
The HZDS created the firm Salus. Party representatives are reluctant to say whether it makes a profit or a loss.
The KSS founded the firm Iskrapress, which publishes the biweekly Kroky. According to a KSS spokesman, the firm makes a loss and the party loses Sk50,000 (€1,270) per month.
The law allows for only a limited scope of activities for a firm established by a political party. Such a company can run a printing house, publishing house and produce promotional materials.
