THE OPPOSITION parties agreed that early elections should take place on April 8, 2006, guaranteeing that 72 MPs, including those from the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) would back the proposal, the daily SME reported.
If the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), which until recently were in favour of early elections, supported the opposition, they would together gain more than the required 90 votes for the shortening of the electoral term.
However, the SMK and KDH now refuse to support the proposal.
"It is too late now," SMK chairman Béla Bugár said, adding that he did not want to split the coalition under pressure from outside.
KDH chairman Pavol Hrušovský said that he was sorry that the Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) rejected early elections, adding that because the KDH keeps its word, it would not support the opposition plan either.
