Justice Minister Tomáš Borec will face an attempt by the opposition to dismiss him after Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška set Monday as the date for an extraordinary session of parliament, the TASR newswire reported on Thursday, November 15.
Opposition parties the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd announced on Wednesday that they were submitting a proposal requiring that Borec be dismissed. The parties opted to take the move after parliament voted down the agenda of an extraordinary session dedicated to discussing problems in the judiciary.
"We're submitting a proposal on dismissing minister Borec because he really made mistakes, but especially because he didn't support the normal, realistic debate that we were supposed to have here today," SDKÚ chairman Pavol Frešo said in parliament on Wednesday. In their proposal, the parties state that since taking up his post more than six months ago, Borec has failed to come up with an approach aimed at halting the dwindling level of public trust in the judiciary. They also bemoan what they call the minister's failure to disclose how he's aiming to increase the enforceability of laws and people's access to justice.
