Slovak prime Minister Robert Fico talked with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán on October 7; discussing mainly the refugee quotas and the Hungarian referendum concerning them.
Despite the result of the referendum – which was rendered invalid by low turnout – the Hungarian government does not plan to give up the ban on obligatory re-distribution of refugees, and will amend the Hungarian Constitution, Orbán said, as quoted by the Pravda daily. He added, though, that the amendment will be in compliance with EU legislation.
Due to the Slovak presidency of the EU, Orbán came to the Slovak PM to seek support for this change, the daily wrote.
At a press conference following the meeting, the Hungarian PM sent a message to the European Union, saying that several hundreds of thousands of people illegally crossed Hungary, including those who killed innocent people in Paris. “What happened in Paris, could easily happen also in Bratislava and Budapest,” Orbán warned, as quoted by the Plus Jeden Deň daily.
He called on Fico to apply the ruling on abolishing inner borders of the Schengen area, and stated that it is necessary to protect the outer border of the EU.
"You probably have not seen any live migrant yet," the Hungarian PM said, adding that this is thanks to the protection of the southern border of Hungary.
At the Bratislava summit, a road map was approved which has very ambitious goals concerning migration, Fico told the press conference.
