Each country can submit only one city as their bid. Bid applications are due December 15. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will narrow the number of candidates down to four or five in March, 1998.
Sion, Switzerland- The front runner. Most organized of all the cities. Most advanced city and strong contacts with International Olympic committee which is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. Results of Olympic Voting: Voter turn-out - 66%, In favor - 83%.
Klagenfurt, Austria- There has been talk of cooperation between Slovenia and Italy in the Alps. Would be a disadvantage to spread out Olympic events. Picturesque city in the mountains with high-class facilities. Results of Olympic Voting: NA
Either Trieste, or Venice Italy- Olympic events would be held in the Julian Alps far from Olympic center. Hard to imagine port cities as headquarters for Olympic village. Results of Olympic Voting: NA
Zakopane, Poland- The Polish side of the Tatras is not as extensive as the Slovak side. There are not many areas suitable to hold ski events. Asked to work together with Poprad-Tatry to host Olympics but were politely refused. Results of Olympic Voting: Voter turn-out - 30% (whole country), In favor - 83%.
Jaca, Spain- Located in the Pyrenees, not thought of as front-runner because of lack of organization. Results of Olympic Voting: NA
Muchow, Korea- Hurt by Olympic games being held in Asia in 1998. IOC is likely to bring Winter Olympics back to Europe after Nagano, and Salt Lake City. Results of Olympic Voting: NA
