During the same period, 211 employers announced that another 5,863 jobs were under threat, the TASR newswire reported.

Further lay-offs are expected in January, February and March 2009. According to Sihelsky, the job losses are not necessarily always due to the global economic crisis, although this has played a negative role. At the end of 2008, UPSVAR registered 6,609 people returning to Slovakia after working abroad, with the largest number recorded in Prešov region. Of these, 2,944 people returned from the Czech Republic, 1,039 from Great Britain and 962 from Hungary. TASR
