ALMOST two thirds of Slovaks support the idea of fully professional armed forces, something that the Defence Ministry is implementing as of January 2006, the SITA news agency reported.
According to a poll carried out in November 2005 by the TNS SK agency for the Defence Ministry, 67 percent of all respondents see the end of compulsory general conscription for Slovak men positively. Only 13 percent are against the idea.
The Defence Ministry's decision pleased university educated respondents the most, with as many as 79 percent in favour of making the military fully professional.
The cancellation of the compulsory general conscription has most opponents amongst the elderly - 16 percent are against the plan. However, 58 percent of respondents over the age of 60 said they supported a professional army.
