THREE Slovak athletes have won medals at the Paralympic Games in Sochi.
In the category of women’s downhill for visually impaired skiers Henrieta Farkašová won the gold medal on March 8, aided by her guide Natália Šubrtová.
“I was a bit nervous about my number one [she opened the competition in the discipline - ed. note], but I got rid of it at the start,” Farkašová told the Sme daily.
Miroslav Haraus with his guide Maroš Hudík placed second in men’s downhill for the visually impaired, only 0.025 seconds after the winner.
“It’s a shame, it’s those jumps that Miro does not see; he only hears my voice in the walkie-talkie,” Hudik told Sme, adding that that was probably where Haraus lost some precious time.
Finally, Jakub Krako, who won three gold medals at the Vancouver games four years ago, delivered the expected result and won the men’s Super-G for visually impaired skiers, this time with a new guide, Martin Motyka.
“The track was great,” Krako said after the competition. “The constructors really played with it, so it had the same parameters as those for healthy athletes.”
Slovak curlers have been a surprise in Sochi. This is the first time the Slovak Paralympic curling team has competed at the games, and in its first match it beat the US team 6:4, and later defeated China 8:3 and Finland 9:6.
