Slovak deputies have approved an agreement with the Vatican on Catholic education, which will install religious education at elementary schools. Students who do not want to enrol in religion classes can choose ethics as an alternative subject, the daily SME wrote.
The opponents of the agreement worry that students who refuse to sign up for the Catholic education might be discriminated against and face pressure, especially in smaller villages.
Deputies have also approved a similar agreement with another 11 churches registered in Slovakia.
The new agreements give the churches the authority to set up and administer their own schools, which will receive state funding at the same level as state schools.
