Following a five-day long debate, the parliament on Monday, August 6, approved for changes to the pension system to be made through a fast-tracked proceeding.
The opposition had complained, the TASR newswire wrote, that there is no reason to deal with the bill so swiftly, without a proper debate taking place. In protest, the opposition did not take part in the vote on Monday. Instead, it unfolded a banner in the hall stating: "Smer - thieves of pensions". According to the bill, deductions to the second pension pillar will be reduced from 9 percent to 4 percent, and it will no longer be mandatory for people entering the labour market to join the second pillar.
