PEOPLE will continue to lose their Slovak citizenship if they are granted the citizenship of another country, as parliament has dismissed the amendment to the State Citizenship Act proposed by Peter Osuský of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, the SITA newswire reported on February 11.
Osuský was proposing to restore the rules that were valid until 2010, when the changes were adopted as a response to a Hungarian law on dual citizenship. If the amendment was passed, Slovaks could only lose their citizenship if they requested it.
Moreover, the amendment was to allow people who had lost their citizenship based on the 2010 amendment to regain it, SITA wrote.
So far, 668 people have lost their Slovak citizenship. Most of them were granted Czech citizenship (227), German citizenship (128), Austrian citizenship (84) and British citizenship (58). Only 46 people were granted Hungarian citizenship, SITA wrote.
The Interior Ministry led by Robert Kaliňák is currently preparing its own amendment to the law, which should be submitted to parliament in summer.
