Slovakia may join the list of countries that have ratified the treaty on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) as early as June 21, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška told a press conference after meeting European Commission Vice-president Maroš Šefčovič on June 19, the TASR newswire wrote.
"I personally believe that we can join the countries that are complying with their commitments on Thursday evening," said Paška to TASR. The issues will be debated in parliament beginning at 9:00 on Thursday.
Paška had assured European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on June 12 that the ESM would certainly be adopted at the parliamentary session beginning on June 19, as the governing Smer party has enough votes even if opposition MPs refuse to back the bailout mechanism.
