Slovakia's general prosecutor will not be elected by the public in a manner similar to the president, after parliament on May 30 rejected a proposal submitted by independent MP Daniel Lipšic (founder of the New Majority (NOVA) party) to amend the respective constitutional law. Lipšic submitted the motion in order to resolve the long-running vacancy at the head of the General Prosecutor's Office.
"The proposed piece of legislation reflects on the non-standard situation in the Slovak legal system caused by a long-running unwillingness on the part of the Slovak president to appoint a lawfully elected candidate for general prosecutor to office," read material attached to the proposed amendment, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
