Slovakia should not cling stubbornly to the existing text of the European Constitutional Treaty at any cost, when other EU member countries are unwilling to ratify it, Rudolf Bauer, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for European Affairs, announced at a committee meeting on March 14.
He pointed out that a discussion about an alternative solution to the crisis concerning the European constitution would be best, because it is pointless discussing the ratification of a text that has almost no chance of succeeding within the EU as a whole.
In response, Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš stated that the Slovak government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot act otherwise, because the Slovak parliament and most of the EU member states have already ratified the existing text. Kubiš sees no reason for Slovakia to change its stance.
